About the Design

Stolen Spirits

This handprint, this design, was created with the vision of inclusion for every soul who’s been affected by this topic. About how this unkindness is spreading, it is not only aimed at our strong-hearted indigenous women and girls, but also our 2 spirit community. While I like many, had seen and been made aware of what the red dress symbol and handprint meant, MMIWG. Demanding justice and honour for our stolen sisters, since then, it has grown.

When it was brought to my attention that this movement was to include 2-Spirited individuals as well. My heart spoke before my words could. I identify as a 2-Spirit indigenous woman. This speaks from my soul, and it is a very real concern I share. Thus, I was honoured and am very proud to present a design that brings together two communities.

The shifting colours within the feathers represent the loss of life and innocence that we honour in the passing of the deceased, as well as those living. The darkened colours behind the handprint symbolize the 2 Spirit community. Alongside the stars that were chosen to dance around them as a reminder that even in darkness, we can muster the strength and find light to continue fighting on. For the interior of the hands, it was kept simple with the profile of a person wearing a hoodie.

Lastly, the phrase ‘No more stolen sisters’ has kept a strong and independent voice. I intended for it to maintain its original strength and to broaden its horizon to invoke a sense of overall unity with this new inclusion. Thus, I decided to slightly alter a single word, ‘No more stolen spirits. That was also a reason I chose not to include a dress.

My aim was for this art piece to appear simpler at a glance, with many more fine lines in the details. Just as this day isn’t just a day. It’s so much more than that.

About the Artist

Jil-Leesa GW is a graphic design artist based out of Sarnia, Ontario. A member of Aamjiwnaang First Nations located along the banks of the St Clair River and proudly counts herself among the Deer Clan.

From an early age, she discovered that creative outlets form a link between the artist and the viewer that couldn’t be expressed through words. This fueled her and became part of her inspiration. Through her works, she seeks to convey inner strength, the beauty of the natural world, and the subtle but powerful importance of connection in our daily lives. She hopes that her work will bring joy, foster community in those around her, and that in doing so, bring herself and others to new heights of self-expression.

Her artistic career has been rife with difficulty, which she has sought to persevere and grow from. As a self-taught artist, she has spent much of her free time researching different mediums and finding her niche in the art community. Aside from traditional paper and pencil, her preferred medium is digital art, and she utilizes a range of programs to harness inspiration and bring the soul of the art to life. Counted among her achievements is the Orange Shirt Day design ‘Unity‘ featured within TD Bank’s archives for the year 21’

When not making digital art, Jil-Leesa’s hobbies include taking long walks with her dog, beading earrings, drinking coffee, spending quality time with friends and family, and enjoying whatever day the world sees fit to throw at her.
